A missing Husky named Bandit is back home after an extraordinary rescue operation in northern Illinois that combined advanced drone technology with the efforts of police officers, firefighters, emergency responders, and community volunteers.

According to Backwoods Drone Search & Rescue, Bandit was located early on the morning of June 15, 2026, after spending hours trapped deep inside a large marsh near Lakemoor. Search crews had been working throughout the night after hearing the dog’s cries but were unable to pinpoint his exact location because the sounds echoed across the wetlands.

At approximately 5:45 a.m., a thermal imaging drone operated by the volunteer search team detected Bandit nearly 683 feet into the marsh. The exhausted Husky was reportedly almost completely submerged, with only his head, part of his back, and one front leg remaining above the water.

Once the dog’s location was confirmed, officers from the Lakemoor Police Department coordinated a rescue effort. Wearing protective dry suits, officers entered the marsh while the drone remained overhead, guiding them through the difficult terrain and monitoring their progress. After about 25 minutes, rescuers reached Bandit and used an extended animal-control pole to pull him from the water.

As the operation continued, firefighters and additional rescue personnel arrived with a boat. Navigating through dense lily pads and heavy vegetation, the team safely transported Bandit back to shore before rushing him to a veterinary hospital for treatment.

Bandit was found suffering from exhaustion and numerous tick bites. Rescue officials said he initially struggled to eat and recover but gradually regained his strength with veterinary care and close monitoring.

One month after the rescue, Backwoods Drone Search & Rescue shared that Bandit has made an excellent recovery. Aside from two small shaved areas on his front legs from medical treatment, the Husky has returned to his normal life at home.

The organization credited the successful rescue to the teamwork of the Lakemoor Police Department, firefighters, EMS personnel, rescue boat crews, community members who reported hearing Bandit’s cries, and the volunteer drone team that provided critical aerial support.

The rescue highlights how thermal imaging technology is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in search-and-rescue missions, helping first responders locate missing people and animals in areas that are difficult or dangerous to search from the ground.
