For years, Karine lived under a reality that most people could hardly imagine. She was diagnosed with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), an extremely rare hereditary genetic disorder that makes the body unusually vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Even ordinary exposure to sunlight can cause severe skin damage and dramatically increase the risk of developing skin cancers.
Because of her condition, sunlight became something Karine had to fear. While most people could simply step outside during the day, she had to take extraordinary precautions to protect her skin. Avoiding direct sunlight, covering exposed areas of her body, and constantly monitoring changes to her skin became part of her everyday life.
But Karine refused to allow her disease to determine every decision she made.
One of the most important choices of her life was her decision to become a mother. When Karine and her husband, Edmilson, welcomed their daughter Zaya, the birth brought enormous happiness to their family. Yet instead of receiving only support, Karine also faced cruel criticism.
Some people called her “irresponsible” for choosing to have a child while living with such a serious genetic condition. Others questioned whether she had made the right decision. Those comments were deeply hurtful, but Karine remained firm. She explained that building a family with the man she loved and becoming a mother had always been among her greatest dreams.
For Karine, her illness was not a reason to stop living. It was a reason to appreciate life even more.
Unfortunately, her battle with XP became increasingly difficult. Over the years, Karine underwent more than 250 surgeries to remove tumors and treat complications associated with the disease. The repeated tumors affected different parts of her face, including her nose, ears, eyes, and mouth.
Each operation brought pain, recovery, and uncertainty. Yet she continued fighting.
Her story also drew attention because of the extraordinary number of medical procedures she had endured. While the disease was incurable, doctors continued trying to control the cancer and preserve her quality of life.
Eventually, however, the cancer became more aggressive. It progressed beyond the areas initially affected and developed metastases, meaning that cancer cells had spread to other parts of her body.
At one point, immunotherapy became one of the major treatment options available to her. Accessing the treatment was not easy, and a fundraising campaign helped her obtain the medical care she desperately needed. Support from people who had followed her story gave Karine and her family hope during an incredibly difficult period.
But despite treatment and the efforts of her doctors, the disease continued to advance.
As her health deteriorated, Karine’s story became more than a story about a rare disease. It became a story about resilience, motherhood, love, and the determination to live life according to one’s own choices despite circumstances that seemed impossible.
Karine knew that her life would always involve risks and difficult medical battles. Nevertheless, she chose to experience the things that mattered most to her — including marriage, motherhood, and creating a family with Edmilson.
Her journey came to an end in late July 2026, when her health became critical and she passed away after years of battling the complications of xeroderma pigmentosum and cancer.
Karine’s life was marked by extraordinary hardship, but it was also defined by courage. She faced hundreds of surgeries, painful treatments, public criticism, and a disease that constantly threatened her life. Through it all, she continued to defend one simple idea: having a rare and devastating illness should not automatically mean giving up on the dreams that make life meaningful.
Her daughter Zaya will remain one of the most important parts of her legacy — a reminder that, despite the suffering she endured, Karine chose love, family, and hope.
Her story leaves behind a powerful message: sometimes courage is not the absence of fear or suffering. Sometimes courage is choosing to live, love, and dream despite knowing how difficult the journey may become.
