For years, a Chinese man lived with an enormous tumor that dramatically changed the appearance of his face and made everyday life incredibly difficult. The mass eventually grew to a size comparable to a football, causing severe facial deformity and isolating him from much of the life he once knew.
The man, who was 37 years old at the time of his operation, reportedly came from Zhaoqing in Guangdong Province, China. His condition had developed over many years, gradually transforming what had once been an ordinary life into a constant struggle.
According to accounts of his story, he left his family home in 1998 because he feared that his condition would become a burden on his parents. He reportedly told his family that they should forget about him and concentrate on raising and caring for their other children.
It was an extraordinarily painful decision.
Instead of returning home, he lived away from his family while the tumor continued to grow. As the mass became larger, his facial appearance changed dramatically. The enormous growth made social interaction increasingly difficult and reportedly left him living a life far removed from the family he had once been close to.

Doctors at Sun Yat-sen University Hospital in Guangzhou agreed to perform an extremely complicated procedure to remove the massive tumor from his face. The operation was considered high-risk because of the size and location of the growth and its relationship with surrounding facial structures.
Before undergoing surgery, the patient reportedly understood that there were significant dangers involved. Removing such a large mass was not a simple procedure, and there was no guarantee that everything would go according to plan.
Yet he decided to take the risk.
After years of living with the tumor, surgery represented more than a medical procedure. For him, it was a chance to regain a sense of normality and, perhaps most importantly, reconnect with the people he had left behind.
