Sometimes, a single second can completely change a person’s life.
For Dallas Wiens, that moment came in November 2008 while he was working on a church construction project in Fort Worth, Texas. In March 2011, Dallas Wiens underwent a groundbreaking operation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
The surgery was led by plastic surgeon Dr. Bohdan Pomahač and involved a large multidisciplinary medical team.
The operation lasted approximately 15 hours and involved more than 30 medical professionals.
During the procedure, surgeons transplanted a complex combination of facial tissues. The transplant included skin, a nose, lips, muscles, nerves, and other important structures.
The surgical team carefully connected blood vessels to restore circulation to the transplanted tissue. They also connected nerves in an effort to allow the transplanted facial muscles and tissues to gradually regain function.
It was an extraordinary achievement in reconstructive medicine.
For Wiens, it represented something even more personal—a chance to regain some of the basic abilities that had been taken away from him by the accident.
The Transplant Could Not Restore His Vision
Although the face transplant was remarkably successful, it was not a complete restoration.
One of the most important limitations was Wiens’ eyesight.
The donor’s eyes were not transplanted. More importantly, the electrical accident had caused irreversible damage to Wiens’ visual system.
As a result, the surgery could not restore his vision.

Wiens would remain blind.

Recovery after the transplant was not immediate.
Wiens needed extensive rehabilitation and continuous medical care. Because his body had received tissue from another person, he also needed powerful anti-rejection medications for the rest of his life.
These medications are essential because the immune system naturally attempts to attack foreign tissue.
Living with a transplanted face therefore comes with significant responsibilities and medical risks.
Nevertheless, little by little, Wiens began to regain abilities that once seemed almost impossible.
He developed greater control over his facial muscles. He was able to breathe through his transplanted nose and eat more normally.
His speech also improved.
Perhaps most remarkably, he gradually regained the ability to make facial expressions.
He could smile.
For many people, a smile is something completely ordinary. For Wiens, being able to smile again represented an extraordinary milestone.
More Than a Change in Appearance
The significance of Dallas Wiens’ transplant went far beyond how he looked.
